Frequently Asked Questions

It is natural to have questions before beginning counselling. Here are some gentle answers to help you understand what to expect and decide what feels right for you.

How do I know whether counselling is right for me?

You do not need to wait until things become unbearable or have a clear diagnosis to seek counselling.

Perhaps life looks fine from the outside, but inside you feel anxious, exhausted, disconnected, or unsure of yourself. Maybe you have tried to work things out on your own, yet the same feelings or relationship patterns keep returning.

Counselling offers you a space where you do not have to carry everything alone. We can begin with whatever feels most present for you, even if you are not yet sure how to explain it.

What kinds of concerns can counselling help me with?

You are welcome to come with whatever has been weighing on you. This may include anxiety or emotional exhaustion; self-doubt, perfectionism, or a harsh inner critic; relationship or attachment difficulties; difficulty setting boundaries or expressing your needs; people-pleasing; family-of-origin experiences; life transitions or a loss of direction; feeling empty or disconnected; and patterns that keep repeating.

Your experience does not need to fit neatly into a category. We can take time to understand it together.

What is your counselling approach?

My approach is warm, collaborative, and tailored to you. I will not treat you as a problem to be fixed or apply the same method to everyone.

Rather than focusing only on symptoms or offering quick advice, we may gently explore the emotions, needs, beliefs, and relationship patterns beneath what you are experiencing.

I draw from Emotion-Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Schema Therapy, CBT, and ACT. You do not need to understand these terms. What matters is finding a way of working that feels meaningful and manageable for you.

What does “experiential” counselling mean?

Sometimes we understand a problem very well in our minds, yet still feel unable to change how we react or feel. Experiential counselling helps us go beyond intellectual understanding and gently connect with what is happening inside you.

With your permission, I may invite you to notice an emotion, physical sensation, inner voice, or different part of yourself. We will move at a pace that feels safe enough for you. You will always have a choice and will never be pressured to explore something before you feel ready.

What happens in the first counselling session?

The first session is a gentle beginning. We will talk about what has brought you to counselling, what life has been like for you recently, and what you hope might become different.

You do not need to prepare, organise your story perfectly, or know where to begin. It is okay to feel nervous, uncertain, or emotional. We will take our time, and you are welcome to ask any questions.

What is the complimentary Discovery Call?

The complimentary 20-minute Discovery Call is a brief and informal conversation before you decide whether to begin counselling.

You can share a little about what you are looking for, ask questions, and get a sense of how I work. It also gives us an opportunity to consider whether working together feels like a good fit. There is no obligation to book afterwards. The call is not a counselling or crisis-support session.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no single answer, because everyone comes with a different story and different needs. Some people seek support for a particular situation over a shorter period, while others choose more time to understand deeper emotional or relationship patterns.

We can discuss what feels appropriate for you and review our work as we go. You do not need to commit to a fixed number of sessions at the beginning.

Will you tell me what I should do?

I understand that when you feel stuck, you may wish someone could simply tell you the right answer. At the same time, the most meaningful answers are often the ones that feel true to who you are.

I will not make decisions for you. Instead, I will help you understand yourself more clearly, recognise what you need, and explore choices that feel authentic and workable. Where helpful, I may offer observations, psychological perspectives, practical strategies, or gentle challenges.

What if I find it difficult to talk about my feelings?

That is completely okay. Many people find it difficult to put their inner experience into words, especially if they have spent years being strong, staying capable, or taking care of others.

You do not need to share everything immediately. Silence, uncertainty, and not knowing what to say are all welcome. We will move gently and help you find words for what has been difficult to name.

Are sessions confidential?

Your privacy is an important part of creating a space where you can speak openly and feel safe. What you share will be treated confidentially, within professional, ethical, and legal limits. Exceptions may apply where there is a serious and immediate risk of harm or where disclosure is legally required.

I will explain these limits clearly before counselling begins, and you are always welcome to ask questions.

Do you offer online counselling?

Yes. Online sessions may be held through Zoom or Tencent Meeting (腾讯会议), depending on your location and preference. You can indicate your preferred platform when booking, and we can choose what feels most accessible and comfortable for you.

Can we have sessions in English or Mandarin?

Yes. Counselling is available in both English and Mandarin Chinese. You are welcome to use whichever language helps you express yourself more naturally, and it is completely fine to move between the two during a session.

How do I know whether you are the right counsellor for me?

Finding the right counsellor is not only about qualifications or therapeutic approaches. It also matters whether you feel understood, respected, and sufficiently safe to be yourself.

The Discovery Call gives you an opportunity to meet me, ask questions, and notice how it feels to speak together. You do not need to make an immediate decision. If another form of support may better meet your needs, I will discuss this with you honestly.

Is counselling worth the investment?

It is understandable to think carefully before investing your time, emotions, and money in counselling.

Counselling is not only about feeling better temporarily. It can help you understand yourself more deeply, relate to your emotions with greater compassion, and gradually change patterns that affect your wellbeing, relationships, and choices.

Although no specific outcome can be guaranteed, I will approach our work with care, professionalism, and a clear commitment to what matters to you. The complimentary Discovery Call can help you decide whether this feels like the right step for you now.

What are your session fees?

The initial 80-minute session is S$150. Standard 50-minute sessions are S$150, and optional extended 80-minute sessions are S$220.

The complimentary 20-minute Discovery Call is free and gives you space to ask questions before deciding whether to begin counselling.

Where are in-person sessions held?

In-person sessions are available in Singapore. The exact location and arrival details will be shared with you after booking.

Online sessions are also available through Zoom or Tencent Meeting, depending on your location and preference.

What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?

Please provide at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Cancellations within 24 hours and missed sessions may be charged the full session fee, except in emergencies or circumstances outside your reasonable control.

If you arrive late, we can still use the remaining time, but the session will usually end at the originally scheduled time so that the next client is not affected.

What if I need urgent or crisis support?

TreeHeart Counselling is not an emergency or crisis service, and messages or enquiry forms are not monitored continuously.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger in Singapore, call 995 or 999, or go to the nearest A&E. For 24-hour emotional support, call Samaritans of Singapore at 1767 or WhatsApp CareText at 9151 1767. If you are outside Singapore, please contact your local emergency or crisis service.

TreeHeart Counselling
